Frequently Asked Questions

The app says it can't write my chapter!

You'll see this message if the AI detects inappropriate content. To fix, check your chapter description, and also the title and characters for the novel (gear icon in upper left). Feel free to email support if it seems like there's a bug.

My chapter isn't very well-written.

Maybe parts of your chapter are inconsistent with the rest, or some details just aren't plausible. This happens sometimes, and is part of the fun of the app! Tap Rewrite until you're satisfied. Take more control as needed: switch back to "plan it myself" from "automatic mode", or add detail to your description. If you use GPT-4, you should see fewer problems of this type.

My chapter text is problematic.

If your chapter contains anything harmful or offensive, click the button, and tap Rewrite to replace the text with something new. If you keep seeing problem content, check your chapter settings, story title, and characters. Look for anything that could be leading the AI to write what it's writing. You're welcome to email support with questions, or so that we're aware.

That said, it's worth nothing that we haven't seen the app write anything harmful or offensive, other than when such content was entered by the user in the title, character info, or chapter description.

How can I export my novel?

Tap the share icon in the upper right corner of the novel screen, and then tap the Share... button to send or post a web link. You can also tap View to open your browser to a page containing your story. From the browser, you could copy-paste the story text, or export it as a PDF.

I shared a link to my novel, and now I regret it.

To deactivate all previously shared links, tap the share icon in the upper right corner again, and then tap Cancel Previous Sharing. After a minute or so, all previously shared links will stop working.

How can I edit my novel?

Currently, you can't directly edit the text of your chapters. Instead, you can tap the button in the upper right of the last chapter to edit its settings. Edit the description, turn characters on or off, or switch between "automatic mode" and "plan it yourself". When you're done, tap Rewrite to generate fresh text. You can even tap Rewrite without changing anything, and you'll get a fresh take on the chapter!

If you want to edit an earlier chapter, you'll have to delete those that come after it.

You can also scroll up to the top and tap the button in the upper left to edit the novel's settings. Here you can change the title and genre, or edit the list of characters which are available for inclusion in the chapters.

Can I delete unwanted novels or chapters?

In the main novels list, swipe from right to left in the usual way to delete. To delete a chapter, tap the button in the upper right to edit, then tap Delete at the bottom. You can only delete the final chapter in a novel.

Why isn't the app free?

Large language models are expensive to run. We pay a fee to our AI service every time you generate a chapter. Charging a small amount makes it viable to operate the app - your money pays those AI service fees, as well as for our servers, app maintenance, monitoring, and new features.

There are a couple ways you can get free coins! If your balance is below 10, we add 5 coins a night. We also give you a 50 coin reward when you use the "Write with friends" feature, if a new app user joins your story.

Why should I use this? Can't I just use ChatGPT to write stories?

You can definitely use ChatGPT to write short stories, about the length of one of our chapters. You can even ask it to continue the storyline, and it might work for a chapter or two, but in my experience you end up exceeding the available context the chat can keep. When using Novelizer, you get these benefits:
